International Tenant Information
In recognition of the shorter term stay in Durham for international students at New College, our Framwellgate properties available to let for 5 month periods commencing either on 1st February or 1st September each year. Please note that for economic reasons we cannot let any of our properties for shorter periods than 5 months.
We prefer to let our houses as single units to groups, but realise that this is not usually convenient for international students, who may be travelling to England either alone or in much smaller groups. We are therefore happy to rent out rooms in our Framwellgate properties to individuals or small groups. This may mean sharing a house with fellow students not previously known to you, but this arrangement has proved highly successful and popular to date.
As with our UK tenants the tenancy can be provisionally agreed verbally or by email, but is not secured until we have received the full agreed deposit in UK Pounds for each tenant into our bank account. If a property is being let to a single group, the tenancy agreement will be emailed to you and can then be signed by all tenants and returned to a mailing address which will be provided. In all other cases, tenants must undertake to sign the tenancy agreement immediately on arrival in Durham.
Please note that in all cases rent must be paid at least monthly, and always in advance. All payments are to be made by bank transfer to the landlords’ nominated UK bank account on the first working day of each calendar month, and tenants are liable for all bank transfer charges, however they may arise. Please note: It can often save international tenants considerable amounts in bank charges if several months rent is advanced in a single transaction.
Payments received in the landlords’ account must be for the full agreed monthly rental amount in UK Pounds for each tenant, and the bank transfer should clearly state the name of the tenant making the payment (even if someone else is paying on their behalf). Any rent shortfall or bank charges arising from payments made in any other currency will be passed on to the tenants. Charges will also be made for rent collection if payments are not made by bank transfer or are unreasonably late.
Tenants are advised to make sure that arrangements for payment of rent are in place well before the tenancy starts. Our UK bank details will be sent to you once the tenancy is provisionally agreed, and include all details necessary for making international transfers.
